Fever Blisters

Fever blisters, also known as cold sores, are lesions that form on the mouth and lips caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1).  Infection with the herpes virus is very common among people as most are exposed to the virus at some point during childhood.  The first time a person is exposed to the virus they will usually notice very general symptoms such as a mild fever, sore throat, or headache.  The herpes simplex virus is unique in that it can stay in your body for years or even decades without showing any signs of its presence.  At any point after the first infection, the virus can become reactivated and appear as a fever blister on the mouth or lips.

Fever blisters can only be spread from person to person during an active outbreak.  Someone who has had a fever blister in the past cannot pass the virus to another person unless they were to come into direct contact with the active blister.  Although there is no cure for the herpes simplex virus, there are several options for shortening the duration of a fever blister or providing some relief while it heals.

Because fever blisters are often uncomfortable and sometimes painful, there are many over-the-counter products available such as moisturizers, numbing agents, and skin protectants that can provide some relief.  There is also a topical antiviral drug called docosanol that is available under the brand name Abreva® as an OTC medication proven to slightly speed up the healing process, as well as two prescription antiviral creams (acyclovir 5% and penciclovir 1%) that your doctor can prescribe for you to treat an active fever blister.

In addition to these commercially-available products, your doctor and pharmacist can work together to compound a specific cream, gel, ointment, or lotion that will help heal a fever blister.  Your health care providers can craft a blend of products that will be uniquely made for your symptoms to provide you with the best possible therapeutic outcomes.  Combining a moisturizer or sunscreen with a particular antiviral drug in a special mixture may be of great benefit to someone who does not find fever blister r
