Compounding is most useful with children because commercially manufactured drugs are often not the best solution for kids.

There are several ways we can help children:

• We can reduce the strength of an adult medication.
• We can flavor the medication so you don't have to fight to get them to take the medicine. What was often done in the past was to crush the medication, or hide it in a drink or a food. This was a good temporary solution, but it is now known that the food's acidity or pH could change the effectiveness of the medication. We ensure that the flavor added is compatible with the medication's properties.
• We can change a regular medication that is only available in an oral form into a suppository - even antibiotics. This is good for children that refuse to take medication or are orally compromised. For example, a seizure patient will not have the ability to swallow if they have gone into a fit; the suppositories are perfect for these circumstances. The drug will be absorbed quickly and be more effective.
• We can also place medications into lollipops, lozenges, suspensions, and freezer pops.
